Fifteen years ago, I stepped into an AA meeting. It was my first and last for over a decade. A girl in the meeting approached me afterward and simply asked, “What happened?”
I must have looked scared or out of place…or something. She was so kind, but I wasn’t ready at the time. Nothing “happened” — but many things, over the years, had been adding up.
Every step is part of it, though. That one AA meeting took every ounce of courage I had. Even though I didn’t attend another one for another 10 years, it fortified me to do it when I was *was* ready.
When we settled on the title for my new book, Freely Sober: Rethinking Alcohol Through the Lens of Faith, I felt so redeemed.
FREELY SOBER.
…Not sober because you have to be.
…Not sober because you did something awful.
…Not sober because it’s against your religion .
…Not sober because you’re training for a marathon (def a good idea!)
…Not sober for a health detox (though cool if so!)
….Not sober because you’re an alcoholic.
But…FREELY sober — because you want to be. Freely sober because it’s actually *better* than the opposite.
Because your life is better, fuller, deeper, and freer without alcohol in it — and you’re choosing it for those reasons.
And so that’s what behind this book, which I’m revealing today! (DRUMROLL PLEASE…!):
The cover is here AND you can pre-order from Amazon starting today!
Here’s what Amazon has to say about the book:
In Freely Sober, Ericka Andersen invites Christian women to reconsider their relationship with alcohol from a posture of honesty, curiosity, and self-compassion, offering empowering knowledge and trusted recovery principles for those curious about sobriety or seeking a way out of a habitual or destructive relationship with alcohol.
Andersen vulnerably shares her own story of sobriety, reflecting on how her private drinking habits began impacting her faith and life. Through her honest account, she opens the door for sober curious women of faith to explore their drinking patterns and see clearly to choose what's best for them.
Freely Sober features:
Practical Tools for Growth: Includes reflection questions, action steps, and assessments designed to help readers see alcohol more clearly
Faith-Based Guidance: Invites readers to draw closer to God in their sobriety journeys, leaning on the Holy Spirit and a supportive community for encouragement and accountability
Accessible for a Variety of Stages: Great for those who are sober curious, questioning their habits, or who want to dig deeper into how alcohol affects their life and faith
Freely Sober charts a pathway to new habits, healing, and spiritual renewal through God's abundant grace for those looking for change. Whether you're struggling yourself with grey area drinking, are looking to support a friend or family member, or are a ministry leader looking for resources, Freely Sober offers wisdom and guidance for a way forward to freedom.

The other day, someone told me it takes “bravery” to share one’s vulnerable stories this way. I don’t necessarily see it that way. I like to reserve words like “bravery” for soldiers on the front lines and the like.
My response to this person was that God has called me to share. He’s empowered me to use my voice and my writing in a way that is unique to me. It’s not special, it’s just what I’m here for — and I hope it helps other people.
This past Sunday at church, my pastor spoke about trees with roots that begin to twine around themselves under the surface.
Even if they are planted in good soil, they can’t survive on their own. Those roots *must* grow outward and towards other trees around them. They survive and thrive only together.
At the risk of over-using nature analogies, this is such a beautiful example of how things work for people too!
What I hope is that this book is the water, soil, air or sunshine someone may need to start untwisting themselves under the surface. It’s a comfort, a guide, a judgment-free resource to help you get curious, ask questions and just…see if alcohol is actually serving you (or not.)
It’s also for friends, family members and churches who want to walk alongside those who may be struggling.
If you’re on this email list, the very best way to support me is to pre-order a copy of Freely Sober today. Will you? Thank you so much for your love & support!
